Managing Qualitative Spatial Information to Support Query-by-Sketch

چکیده
In this paper, we propose an extension of existing geographic information systems to support querying-by-sketch. It makes use of a particular class of queries, called qualitative spatial configuration queries, to match sketch-maps against spatial datasets. After analyzing several approaches, we identify the development of a dedicated qualitative layer as the most suitable solution. To face the combinatorial explosion in the number of qualitative relations, we introduce three different strategies to systematically reduce the information to manage. We provide a prototypical implementation for one of them and present empirical results showing the gain in performances when applying the implemented reduction strategy over the case when no reduction is performed.

Developing a BIM-based Spatial Ontology for Semantic Querying of 3D Property Information
With the growing dominance of complex and multi-level urban structures, current cadastral systems, which are often developed based on 2D representations, are not capable of providing unambiguous spatial information about urban properties. Therefore, the concept of 3D cadastre is proposed to support 3D digital representation of land and properties and facilitate the communication of legal owners...
متن کاملSpatial-Query-by-Sketch
Today’s methods for interacting with geographic information systems (GISs) and geographic databases are primarily aspatial, as they require users to deal with geographic data primarily through alphanumeric command languages. Spatial querying by typing a command in some spatial query language or by selecting the same syntax from pull-down menus is a tedious process, because it often requires ext...
متن کاملRCC11: A Finer Topological Representation for the Alignment of Regions in Sketch Maps
During the last two decades, dozens of qualitative representations have been proposed. These representations are motivated by a wide variety of applications of spatial data processing such as Geographical Information System (GIS), robotic navigation, and high level vision. For topological reasoning, the Region Connected Calculus (RCC) is perhaps the best-known formalism. The two algebras, RCC5 ...
متن کاملQuery Processing in Spatial-Query-by-Sketch
Spatial-Query-by-Sketch is the design of a query language for geographic information systems. It allows a user to formulate a spatial query by drawing the desired configuration with a pen on a touch-sensitive computer screen and translates this sketch into a symbolic representation that can the processed against a geographic database. Since the configurations queried usually do not match exactl...
متن کاملA Reliable Qualitative Information for the Alignment of Sketch and Metric Maps
Sketch maps are externalizations of cognitive maps which are typically distorted, schematized, incomplete, and generalized. Processing spatial information from sketch maps automatically requires reliable formalizations which are not subject to schematization, distortion or other cognitive effects in sketch maps. Based on previous empirical work, the authors identified different sketch aspects s...
